It is mid-July, the heart of high season : the fields are open, the terraces face the river, and the water is as warm as it will get this year. Fifteen minutes from Quebec City over the bridge, Ile d'Orleans is the shortest countryside escape there is from town. Here is what is actually happening on the island right now and in the coming weeks, rather than a generic calendar of "summer".
Where the season stands, as of July 19, 2026
Strawberries : winding down. Picking usually starts around June 24 and the fields stay abundant until roughly mid-July. A few growers still have late strawberries, but this is no longer the main event — call ahead.
Blueberries : peak season. They run from early July through mid or late August depending on variety. This is the safest fruit to aim for this week.
Raspberries : just starting. They arrive from mid-July and the window lasts about four weeks. The next two weekends are the sweet spot.
Apples and cider : not yet. Apple u-pick does not open until late August — at Cidrerie Verger Bilodeau in Saint-Pierre it will be August 29, 2026, then daily until mid-October. The cider shops, however, are open now.
Farmers market : it is not held every weekend. The remaining 2026 dates are Saturdays July 25, August 15, September 5 and September 26, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, at 7014 chemin Royal.
U-pick dates shift every year with the weather. Growers recommend checking their social media or phoning the day before.
Saint-Laurent beach
Few visitors know this : Ile d'Orleans has a real sand beach, facing the Saint Lawrence River in the village of Saint-Laurent. It's the island's only public beach and offers a singular experience : salty wind, views of the south shore, cruise ships heading to Quebec City, and the immense water surface changing colours throughout the day. The river water stays cool even in July. Free access, parking available.
Kayaking on the Saint Lawrence
Paddling along Ile d'Orleans is one of the most memorable warm-season experiences. Several outfitters offer rentals and guided trips. Waters are calmer in the morning and near sheltered bays. Watch for currents and tides. Sunset trips, when the light gilds the Sainte-Petronille cliffs, are unforgettable.
U-pick, season by season
The island is one vast mosaic of orchards, fields and kitchen gardens. U-pick runs from early summer through autumn, but each fruit has a short window. Here is the real order of the season, with the point we have reached today.
Late June → mid-July — Strawberries (winding down)
The Ile d'Orleans strawberry is a certified island fruit, known for its sweetness. Picking usually starts around June 24 and the fields stay abundant until roughly mid-July. As of this update we are at the tail end of the season : there are still late strawberries here and there, but this is no longer the fruit to prioritise.
Early July → late August — Blueberries (peak season)
The safest bet right now. Blueberries are picked from early July through mid or late August depending on variety. A few island farms grow them organically. Perfect for desserts, smoothies, and freezers filled ahead of time.
Mid-July → mid-August — Raspberries (just starting)
More fragile and more aromatic than strawberries. They arrive from mid-July and the window lasts about four weeks. On the island, where the raspberry is also a certified fruit, some growers extend the harvest much later into the season.
Late August → mid-October — Apples (coming up)
The tilt into autumn. At Cidrerie Verger Bilodeau in Saint-Pierre, u-pick opens on August 29, 2026, daily from 9 AM, and runs to mid-October : six hectares, more than three thousand dwarf and semi-dwarf trees, about ten varieties, with a petting farm and picnic areas. Available varieties are updated every Thursday on their Facebook page.
Alongside that, roadside stands bring out the summer vegetables from late July : tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, zucchini. And near the bridge, Cidrerie du Bout de l'Ile (Polyculture Plante, in Sainte-Petronille) links both seasons in one stop — u-pick strawberries then apples, from late June to early October, with pies made on the premises.
The farmers market : four Saturdays, not every weekend
This is the most common planning mistake, and we are correcting it here : the Marche public de l'Ile d'Orleans is not held every weekend. It runs on set dates, a handful of Saturdays through the season, from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, at 7014 chemin Royal. For the rest of 2026 the dates are Saturdays July 25, August 15, September 5 and September 26. It gathers the essential local growers in a single stop : cheeses, breads, vegetables, preserves. If your stay does not fall on one of those dates, fall back without hesitation on the roadside stands and farm shops, which are open every day in high season.
67 km cycling loop
One of the most beautiful cycling routes in Quebec, especially in summer. The full island loop along route 368 is relatively flat with constant river views. Plan strategic stops at cideries, Boulangerie Blouin and the Sainte-Petronille chocolaterie. Leave early to avoid midday heat.
If you are coming this week : aim for blueberries (peak season) and the first raspberries, the beach and kayaking. Do not build the day around strawberries : that window is closing.
If you are coming in August : it is the month of roadside vegetables and late blueberries, and apple u-pick opens right at the end of the month. August 15 falls on a farmers market date.
If you are coming in September : our favourite season. The crowds are gone, apples and cider houses take over, the colours start to turn across the vine rows and orchards, and the vineyards stay open through October.
Weather : evenings cool down fast on the island, even in a heat wave. Bring an extra layer for sunset outings.
Reservations : island restaurants fill quickly in high season. Book a few days ahead, especially on weekends.

Owner's note, July 2026 — Check-in is at 4 PM and check-out at 11 AM, and in high season that really does change the game plan. We suggest keeping the first evening for the beach and the sunset, and pushing u-pick to the next morning, before the midday heat. The other thing we tell every group : check with the grower the day before. Picking windows move from one week to the next with the weather, and that is the number one cause of a wasted drive on the island.
